So, imagine this: You are a PhD student in India, learning foreign relations and you begin the class on America. Your lecturer is a former diplomat who was stationed in Washington and he says, “This is the most important thing you need to know about America: the name of the professional football team in the nation’s capital is called The Redskins.”

The room sits in confused silence, wondering how this could be everything you need to know about America. He continues, “The European invaders who took the land of the indigenous people who inhabited the American continent noticed that they had a darker complexion than they did and they used this fact to dehumanize them and make killing them off more palatable. They called them Redskins and… to this day, in the year 2015, they call the professional football team in their national capital the Redskins, proudly flaunting their victory. They are unapologetic in the use of this name, saying that anyone who disagrees with this ultimate insensitivity is somehow overly sensitive or not a true American. They are a tough bunch and one should know, before approaching them, that they are extremely sensitive to criticism about their own insensitivity. They will quickly label you as well, attempting to dehumanize you too by calling you “politically correct,” “A wimp”, or a “foreigner who doesn’t know any better.” They claim to be lovers of freedom, unless your version of freedom happens to differ from their view, they are  tolerant of all religions, as long as they are their own. They love a good fight and they don’t mind letting you know that they’ve finished more than their share. So yes, my students, tread carefully with these Americans.”

Sliding through the shimmering surface between two worlds
Standing at the center of time as it uncurles
Cutting through the veil of illusion
Moving beyond past conclusions
Rendering all my doubt and confusion unclear

If I could be anywhere
If I could be anywhere
If I could be anywhere right now I would want to be here

Searching for the future among the things we’re throwing away
Trying to see the world through the junk we produce everyday
They say nothing lasts forever,
That all the plastic ever made is still here
That no amount of closing our eyes will make it dissapear

If I could be anywhere
If I could be anywhere
If I could be anywhere in history, I would want to be here

The romans, the spanish the british the dutch
American exceptionalsim so out of touch
The faling of empire repeating its course
Imposing its will rolling by force on and on through time

But the world cant take it very much longer
We’re not gonna make [un]less we’re smarter than stronger
The worlds gonna shake itslef free of our greed somehow

If I could be anywhere
If I could be anywhere
If I could be anywhere and change thing, it would have to be now

They say nothing lasts forever,
That all the plastic ever made is still here
That no amount of closing our eyes will make it dissapear

But the world cant take it very much longer
We’re not gonna make [un]less we’re smarter than stronger
The worlds gonna shake itslef free of our greed somehow

And the world cant take it that you can see
If the ocean don’t make it, neither will we
The worlds gonna shake itself all the way free somehow

If I could be anywhere
If I could be anywhere
If I could be anywhere and change the outcome, it would have to be now
